What is Phuket Airport Transfer?
Phuket airport transfer is the journey from Phuket International Airport (IATA: HKT) to your accommodation — whether a hotel in Patong, a villa in Kamala, or a resort in Bang Tao. It is one of the most important logistics decisions of any Phuket trip: the right choice saves time, money, and stress. Updated June 2026.
Phuket International Airport sits in the north of the island near Thalang district, roughly 35 km from Patong Beach and 45 km from Kata and Karon. According to Airports of Thailand (AOT, 2025), Phuket airport handled 17.34 million passengers in 2025 — a 5.82% year-on-year increase — ranking it among the top 10 busiest airports in Southeast Asia. Two terminals serve arrivals: the international terminal (T2) and the domestic terminal (T3). Flights operate around the clock during high season (November-April).
When we first landed in Phuket and watched fellow travellers get pulled into overpriced unlicensed deals right outside baggage claim, we realised how much local knowledge matters at this airport. The good news: the official, metered transport options at HKT are better than they have ever been.
Phuket has no rail or metro link to the airport. Unlike Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi — which has the Airport Rail Link — or Singapore's Changi, ground transport is your only option. But the available modes have improved significantly since the Smart Bus launched and both Grab and Bolt established airport services.
Approximate travel times from HKT to key destinations:
- Bang Tao & Laguna: 25-35 minutes (14-16 km via Route 402)
- Kamala & Surin: 35-45 minutes (22-25 km)
- Phuket Town (Old Town): 35-45 minutes (28-32 km)
- Patong Beach: 45-55 minutes (32-35 km via Highway 4020)
- Karon & Kata: 55-65 minutes (38-42 km)
- Rawai & Nai Harn: 65-80 minutes (45-50 km)
These timings reflect normal traffic conditions. High season (December-February) and monsoon rains (May-October) can add 20-30 minutes to most routes. For a full picture of what awaits on arrival, see our guide to things to do in Phuket.

Prices as of June 2026. Metered taxi fares include the mandatory 100 THB airport surcharge. App-based prices are estimates subject to surge pricing. All prices in Thai Baht (THB). As of June 2026: 1 USD approx 35 THB, 1 EUR approx 38 THB (Source: Bank of Thailand, June 2026).
For most solo travellers and couples, Bolt offers the best value among direct transfers. Families of four or more will find a shared minivan often works out cheaper per head than multiple separate Grab rides — and far more comfortable with luggage.

Official Taxis: Metered and Fixed-Price Explained
Phuket International Airport operates two official taxi systems, both with dedicated counters directly outside the arrivals halls at T2 (international) and T3 (domestic). Understanding the difference saves money and avoids surprises.
Metered taxis use the government-regulated Thai taxi meter. The base fare is 50 THB, and per-kilometer charges are 12 THB for the first 15 km, then 10 THB thereafter. Every journey departing from HKT incurs a mandatory 100 THB airport surcharge — this is printed on the official rate board at the counter and is not a driver add-on. A journey to Patong typically reads 600-700 THB on the meter, totalling 700-800 THB with the surcharge included.
Fixed-price taxis and the AOT Limousine service use zone-based pricing that does not fluctuate with traffic. Patong zone rates run approximately 800-1,000 THB; Kata and Karon 1,000-1,200 THB. For solo or couple travellers who value predictability, the AOT Limousine — signposted in both terminals — uses newer air-conditioned sedan-class vehicles. Book at the desk inside the terminal before exiting to the car park.
For private transfers — families with bulky luggage, groups of five or more, or late-night arrivals — a pre-booked private minivan via Klook or Viator starts around 1,200 THB for up to 8 passengers with a name-board meet at arrivals.
Three rules for using taxis at HKT:
- Always get a queue ticket from the official counter before walking to the car. The ticket locks in your fare and car details.
- Check the number plate. Legal commercial taxis display yellow or green plates. White plates mean a private, unregistered, uninsured vehicle. Decline any offer from a white-plate driver.
- Never accept a ride from a driver who approaches you inside the terminal. All legitimate services queue through a counter.
In our experience, the official metered taxi queue at international arrivals (T2) moves quickly — rarely more than a 10-minute wait even after a full wide-body landing.
"The airport in Phuket is genuinely well-organised for arrivals — the trick is knowing which queue to join. Stick to the official counter or your Grab pin and you will be in your hotel pool within the hour." — Nico Voss, EVE Phuket
Phuket Smart Bus: Airport to the Beaches for 100 THB
The Phuket Smart Bus (PKSB) is the only scheduled public bus connecting Phuket International Airport to the island's resort beaches. Launched in 2018 and expanded significantly since, it is used as much by expats and long-stay residents as by first-time tourists — a sign of genuine reliability.
Route 1 (Airport to Rawai) runs a flat fare of 100 THB per journey regardless of where you board or disembark. This single route covers almost the entire west coast: from the airport south through Bang Tao Beach, Surin Beach, Kamala Beach, Patong Beach, Karon Beach, Kata Beach, and finally Rawai Beach, with more than 25 stops serving shopping malls, night markets, and major hotels. Children under 7 travel free.
Two additional routes operate for shorter journeys: Route 2 (Phuket Bus Terminal 1 to Patong, 50 THB flat) and the Dragon Line — a free circular city shuttle around Phuket Old Town connecting Central Festival, Phuket Old Town, and OTOP Market. Neither route serves the airport directly.
Service hours for Route 1: Buses depart HKT from 8:15 AM to approximately 11:30 PM, running every 60 minutes. The last northbound service back to the airport from Rawai departs at approximately 7:30 PM. For late-evening airport runs, a taxi or ride-hailing app is necessary.
Critical boarding note: The PKSB does NOT stop at the international arrivals (T2) car park. From T2, follow the airport walkway to the third floor of the domestic terminal (T3), then exit at Exit 3 (facing the car park on the far side of the building). Allow 10 minutes to find it on your first visit.
Payment options on board (updated January 2026):
- Cash — correct change preferred
- QR code via PromptPay (Thai banking app)
- Contactless tap-and-go: Mastercard or Visa credit/debit card (launched January 2026)
- Phuket Rabbit Card — rechargeable smart card sold on board for 300 THB (100 THB card fee + 200 THB travel credit)
- Day Pass: 299 THB for unlimited rides
- 30-day pass: 2,600 THB for unlimited monthly travel
Each Smart Bus is air-conditioned with onboard Wi-Fi, USB charging ports, luggage storage, and wheelchair accessibility. The journey time from HKT to Patong is approximately 90-110 minutes including all stops. For Kata and Karon, allow 2 hours. At 100 THB, it is the cheapest phuket airport transfer by a wide margin.

Phuket Grab App and Ride-Hailing Options
Ride-hailing apps have transformed the phuket airport transfer experience since Grab established its dedicated airport service in 2023. As of June 2026, three apps operate in Phuket: Grab, Bolt, and inDrive. Each works differently at the airport.
Grab is the only ride-hailing app officially authorised to collect passengers within the HKT airport compound. Grab maintains dedicated pickup booths between T2 and T3:
- International arrivals (T2): Exit at Gate 8 and follow Domestic Terminal signs; turn right before T3 to reach the Grab pickup booth.
- Domestic arrivals (T3): Exit Gate 1, turn right, walk straight to the Grab Booth.
Grab fares are upfront and fixed before you confirm. A GrabCar to Patong shows approximately 850-950 THB. Advance booking is available up to 90 days ahead (75 minutes minimum before pickup). Payment accepts cash, in-app credit card, WeChat Pay, and Alipay. Book ahead at Grab's Phuket airport page.
Bolt runs approximately 20-30% cheaper than Grab. To Patong: standard Bolt approximately 570-620 THB; Bolt XL approximately 680 THB; Bolt Van approximately 803 THB — per Bolt's official HKT airport page (verified June 2026). Bolt Motorbike is the cheapest single-passenger option at approximately 373 THB. However, Bolt does not have authorisation to collect inside the airport perimeter. Bolt drivers wait approximately 300 metres outside the terminal gates — manageable for a solo traveller with a daypack, less so with heavy suitcases.
inDrive is a negotiation-based platform where you propose the fare and drivers accept or counter. It typically settles around 560-620 THB for the airport-to-Patong route. Like Bolt, inDrive drivers wait at the airport perimeter. inDrive excels on longer transfers to Khao Lak or Phang Nga where negotiating a fixed fare avoids metered overruns.
We recommend downloading and registering on Grab and Bolt before your flight — both require phone number verification, easier to set up at home than at arrivals. Insider Tips from Locals
Practical Info & Costs
Pre-booking vs. walk-up: For most travellers arriving during daylight hours, walk-up service at the official taxi counter or Grab works fine — no pre-booking required. For late-night arrivals, large groups, travellers with disabilities, or those on a tight connection schedule, pre-booking a private transfer removes all uncertainty.
Currency and payments: All ground transport in Phuket is priced in Thai Baht (THB). As of June 2026: 1 USD approx 35 THB; 1 EUR approx 38 THB; 1 GBP approx 44 THB (Source: Bank of Thailand, June 2026). ATMs are available in both arrivals halls; airport exchange booths offer competitive rates.
SIM cards: AIS, DTAC, and True Move H counters are in both T2 and T3 arrivals. A 30-day tourist SIM with 30 GB data costs 299-399 THB. Having an active number before exiting arrivals is essential for Grab, Bolt, or inDrive.
Departure transfers (return to airport): The Smart Bus from Patong to the airport departs roughly hourly and takes 60-90 minutes. Budget at least 2 hours before your flight from Kata or Rawai, and 90 minutes from Patong. For early morning check-outs, a pre-booked Grab or private transfer avoids uncertainty.
AOT international departure tax — June 2026 update: Airports of Thailand (AOT) raised the international passenger departure service charge from 730 THB to 1,120 THB per person from June 20, 2026, across all AOT-managed airports including Phuket. This is collected as part of your airfare, per AOT's official announcement. Domestic departure charges remain unchanged.
Accessibility: The Smart Bus is wheelchair accessible with dedicated luggage storage. Grab XL and Bolt XL accommodate folding wheelchairs. The AOT Limousine service can arrange accessible vehicles with 24-hour advance notice — contact the airport via phuket.airportthai.co.th or AOT hotline 1722.
