About this event
The main Por Tor altar at Bang Neow Shrine, open daily from this date to the end of the seventh lunar month - the largest and longest-running venue of the festival.
Por Tor Festival (Hungry Ghost Festival), also known as Chinese All Souls' Day, is an important tradition of Phuket's Chinese-descended community, held to make merit and dedicate the resulting blessings to ancestors and wandering spirits. The highlight is the making of red tortoise-shaped cakes (Ang Ku), a symbol of longevity, along with the arrangement of various offerings. The festival takes place during the 7th month of the Chinese lunar calendar (around August–September) and reflects both filial piety and the long-standing continuation of the tradition.
